A Thunder Bay historical landmark will be back open to the public on June 30.
Fort William Historical Park offers 57 historical and modern buildings on 250 acres of land.
Acting General Manager Patrick Morash says they are excited to open again, and are currently preparing a fun and safe experience for the public.
“We’re playing very close attention to the requirements of the Thunder Bay District Health Unit with respect to social distancing, extra cleaning, just generally being careful in terms of how many people we can allow on site at any time,” added Morash.
Visitors interested can also participate in a walking tour where they can be taken around the fort.
These will be a little different because of the pandemic, the main change being only people from the same household can be in any given tour.
“A walking tour would have you roaming the site with interpretations of different aspects of the fort, with explanations of different areas of activity around the site,” explains Morash. “We’re not permitted to have people in our buildings, but there will be a lot of buildings with windows and doors open where people can peek in and see what’s going on.”
Fort William usually would be holding different events over the summer, but because of COVID-19 it is unclear when any will take place.
Morash notes they need to see how things play out with the pandemic before making any concrete plans.
“We’re taking a bit of a wait and see approach, as you can imagine things are very different this year,” mentions Morash. “We are talking about the potential of Haunted Fort in the fall, but of course that will be determined by any number of factors.”
Fort William will be open Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
