Thunder Bay City Council weighed a new by-law that would put harsher restrictions on the use of fireworks in the city.
Northwood Ward Councillor Shelby Ch’ng proposed an amendment to the changing fireworks restrictions Monday night, adding the Lunar New Year as a day when fireworks can be set off.
Councillor Ch’ng cited the cultural importance of the day as why she brought the amendment forward.
“I think it is important that we allow people to express and partake in cultural events without filling out paperwork.” said Ch’ng. “If we can eliminate that for this day I think that would be much appreciated with my connections in the Chinese community.”
The amendment means that fireworks will be able to be discharged on the day, but not purchased.
At-Large Councillor Aldo Ruberto, who voted in favour of the amendment, praised the various proposed by-law altercations to date.
“I’m certainly happy with the changes that have been made,” noted Ruberto. “I’m sure other councillors have had the same comments and complaints when fireworks were going off three days before an event, three days after an event, all hours of the night with no regard to the neighbours. It was a difficult situation.”
Three other days are currently being discussed as days when residents can set off fireworks: New Years Eve, Canada Day, and the August Civic Holiday.
The nights prior to the holidays will also be allowed.
The new by-law will also increase penalties for first time violators of the restrictions.
The by-law will be looked at throughout the summer, with the new document set to be ratified by council at the end of October.
