The construction crews are on site building a temporary 50 bed expansion to the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre.
The contract to erect the facilities in both Thunder Bay and Kenora were awarded back in early March but questions still remain as to when a new, 325-bed facility will be put together.
The president of OPSEU local 708 Shawn Bradshaw says the 50-bed expansion will allow for increased access to skills development, literacy, and technology programs.
There’s no set timeline for the work on the temporary facility.
The plan for a more permanent facility was perhaps first teased by then Thunder Bay MPP Bill Mauro, who unveiled that money was approved to start work on a 325-bed multi-purpose correctional centre.
