A number of crew working on a ship recently docked in Thunder Bay are confirmed to have COVID-19.
Canada Steamship Lines tells us it was Thursday when some workers on the self unloading bulk ship Atlantic Huron tested positive. The symptoms are mild, and the workers are now in quarantine at a hotel in Thunder Bay.
The company says the ship, currently parked in a secure location, is undergoing a two day disinfection as per Health Canada guidelines. Once it receives clearance, a new crew will take over and leave Thunder Bay for Quebec City, part of its regular schedule.
As for the crew that arrived in Thunder Bay on the Atlantic Huron, Canada Steamship Lines says an investigation is underway to find out how the virus got on board.
It tells us before boarding any Canada Steamship Lines ship, all crew must pass a mandatory COVID-19 pre-screening, and are instructed to maintain strict health standards, including wearing face masks and latex gloves. Once they board, all crew are tested again, which is mandatory, and must practice social distancing for 14 days.
The company further points out on March 31st, all the Atlantic Huron’s crew was on board in Sarnia, ready to sail. Everyone tested negative, the next day, ready for departure on April 2nd.
Canada Steamship Lines is not aware of any breach, and is working with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, and provincial authorities for direction and support.
