With COVID-19 cases in the United States growing questions about opening our border come up.
It has been closed to non-essential travel since March 21st.
Health Minister Patty Hajdu strongly suggested to Acadia Broadcasting’s John Ongaro it will likely stay closed until at least August 21st.
“Now is not the time to be managing the risk of increased importation (of COVID-19), we’ve got…the right trajectory in Canada we’re going in the right direction,” explains Hajdu.
However, the border will continue to remain open to essential services and trade.
Hajdu also spoke to the concern about American vehicles being seen in the city during the pandemic. She confirms there have been several Minnesota licence plates spotted, but notes there could be legitimate reasons for that.
The Thunder Bay Liberal MP points out “We have a number of snowbirds for example that have cars registered in the United States, there may be people that have immediate relationships with family that are American so each circumstance is different.
Hajdu adds agents with Canada Border Services are doing a good job of screening all those who come through.
