The NDP feel climate change and mental health go hand in hand.
Mental Health Critic, Bhutila Karpoche explained global warming won’t just impact the environment, it will also put extra stress on those already in need.
“The climate crisis will attack the poor social determinants of mental health including housing stability, food security, social supports and reliable adequate income,” Karpoche said.
“Families are already experiencing devastating property damage and losses as the climate crisis causes more flooding, tornadoes and wildfires in Ontario,” said Peter Tabuns.
“And this is just the tip of the iceberg,” the NDP’s Climate Crisis critic explained.
The NDP introduced a bill today that would require the provincial government to address the ongoing and future health impacts of the climate crisis.
If passed, the Climate Crisis Health Action Plan Act would require the government to ensure Ontario’s health care and public health systems are equipped to handle climate crisis related to health impacts. The bill would also establish both a Climate Crisis and Health Secretariat to develop and implement an action plan, and a science advisory board to provide expert guidance.
