A $1.3-million contract has been handed out for repairs to the Marina Park Overpass.
City Council awarded the contract last night to Tom Jones Corporation. The work will involve removing the structure using a crane, then lifting it back into place after the work is done. City Engineering Director Kayla Dixon says it will sit in the parking lot next to the Pagoda for a few days, but the actual repairs will be completed elsewhere.
She previously reported that structural issues like corrosion are so severe that without repairs, the overpass may have to be shut down during busy events at Marina Park.
When Council discussed the project in March, they heard it might involve creating a new railway crossing at the bottom of Red River Road. At the time, Dixon said both CN and Canadian Pacific Railway want the Camelot Street rail crossing closed if a new crossing is created.
Now, she says that no discussions have taken place recently, but her department will be reaching out to the two companies.
Dixon says this should add another 20 years to the structure’s lifespan.
