An annual neighbourhood cleanup campaign has been postponed indefinitely due to COVID-19.
EcoSuperior Program Coordinator Melissa Davidson says because of the pandemic, it’s not safe to hold Spring Up to Clean Up.
“Obviously, it’s an interesting set of circumstances, but we are hopeful that we’ll be able to get out there and do these big group clean-ups at a later date. It’s just a lot of uncertainty right now,” she points out.
The EcoSuperior official admits she knows some people are itching to pick up litter in their neighbourhoods. The organization can’t advise you to go out and do your own clean-up, even by yourself, “based off of the health advice we are getting.”
If you do go out, Davidson says, “we’re just really, really emphasizing the importance of practicing all the public health protocols at this time.” That includes keeping your distance from others, and protecting yourself from the litter by wearing gloves.
What they endorse at this time is keeping your area cleaner by avoiding littering in the first place. That means making sure garbage and recycling are put in the right containers, and securing your waste.
