Many businesses and volunteers recently came together to help create kits full of cleaning products, hand sanitizer and other personal items for 15 First Nation communities in the Robinson Superior Treaty area.
Ginny Michano is the Board President of Pawgwasheeng Economic Development Corporation and explains they came together under difficult circumstances to help communities deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.
You don’t see a lot of people, so it was nice spending the day with people, but at the same time it was a bit challenging trying to maintain our social distance as well. We have pictures that we took, and you can see we’re all standing apart, but we’re still putting all these packages together. It was a very nice community feeling,” she says.
Michano adds there was leftover hand sanitizer so they decided to donate it to Thunder Bay’s Shelter House.
She says many communities chose to drive to Thunder Bay to pick up their kits, and they were touched by the generosity. Michano points out an official from one community “cried with happniess” after seeing a photo of the supplies they would be getting.
Shared Value Solutions started the initiative and teamed up with distilleries and other agencies in Canada to offer the kits to area First Nations.
