The Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame is out with this year’s list of inductees.
A Thunder Bay Boxer is being inducted. Trevor Stewardson claimed multiple national titles throughout the 90s and earned a bronze medal at the 1998 Commonwealth Games.
Thunder Bay’s Bill Houlder also is joining the Hall of Fame. Houlder enjoyed a successful junior hockey career with the North Bay Centennials.
Other inductees include Atikokan’s Paul Wragg who represented the region with distinction in powerlifting competing successfully at the 1998 Special Olympic Canada Summer Games.
Kenora’s Dave Van Belleghhem is also being inducted after a good football career that included winning two Grey Cups with the Toronto Argonauts and the Calgary Stampeders.
Lloyd Stansell started his career at the Red Rock Recreation Centre in 1958 and went on to provide consultation to curling rinks all across northwestern Ontario.
He has served as an ice technician at the Brier, Scotties Tournament of Hearts and World Championships, from the 1980s to 2000s.
Other inductees include Dryden’s Mike Furlong who dedicated himself to sports development over four decades serving as a coach, referee and organizer for
such sports as hockey, football, gymnastics, swimming and skiing.
The 2019 slate of Inductees will be officially inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame on September 28th at the Valhalla Inn.
