A former local MP has died.
John Rafferty was 65.
Family members announced his passing on Facebook, saying he died at home after an 18-month battle with Leukemia.
Rafferty served two terms as the MP for the riding of Thunder Bay-Rainy River before losing his seat to Liberal Don Rusnak in 2015.
He had also run in three previous federal elections and two provincial elections for the NDP before elected to Ottawa in 2008.
Rafferty was named as the NDP candidate for Thunder Bay-Rainy River in last year’s election, but dropped out for health reasons.
Westfort Councillor Kristen Oliver calls Rafferty a dedicated member of government, and feels “profound sadness” to hear he passed away.
She says she worked with him in her role with the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association, adding she hopes his family can find comfort.
Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath is sending her condolences, saying she’s saddened by his death.
She adds Rafferty was a well-respected champion for his community.
