Winston Churchill school is now coming down as the board builds a new elementary school.
One of its former cheerleaders, Tracey Kotyk, tells us every time she drives by the school and watches its destruction, memories come flooding back.
“It was very competitive in sporting events, I think our boys basketball team won the NORWOSSA championships, and went to Toronto, it was a big deal back then.”
And, questions still linger in her mind as to why the school is slowly coming to the ground.
She believes the layout could’ve been quite successful for an elementary school.
“I’m not sure why they wouldn’t have been able to renovate it for that, I’m sure they have their reasons, but yeah, I did have some thoughts and concerns as to why they were going to all that effort.”
The Thunder Bay resident adds she thinks it’s one of the newer schools in the city.
She also recalls memories of school spirit and sporting events every time she drives by from her nearby home.
“It’s funny, I said to my husband the other day, I was going to stop by and ask if I can have a brick to keep in the back yard, I haven’t done it yet, but who knows.”
