There is a new player in the fight against forest fires in northwestern Ontario.
Darren McLarty is the Northwest Region Fire Response Coordinator for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and he says the reality now is dealing with climate change.
“Are we going to see more or fewer fires on the landscape. Are we going to see more weather extremes or longer fire seasons that are going to impact how we are funded.”
McLarty notes it becomes a complex issue and the best approach is ensuring firefighters are prepared for anything.
