The city is showing off its new electronic voting tabulator for the October 22nd election.
City Clerk John Hannam tells us it has some new features.
That includes a larger screen compared to previous devices making it more “user-friendly” according to Hannam.
He says if there is a mistake on the ballot then it’s much easier to see the error.
The city clerk explains a standard error is over-voting, that is, casting votes for more candidates than required.
The machine would then point out the gaffe, and the voter can either re-vote or not have his or her choice counted.
As well, another essential characteristic of the machine is how sensitive it is to any marks on your ballot.
This feature comes into play because city staff must initial all ballots, if this is not done, “the machine won’t accept the ballot.”
