Yet another Minnesota angler has been fined for trying to smuggle in illegal bait into Ontario.

Carl Brandt of Forest Lake has pleaded guilty and fined 15 hundred dollars for bringing live leeches into the province.

Canada Border Services Agency Officers were conducting an inspection of Brandt's vehicle this past June at the Fort Frances border crossing and discovered a cooler filled with paper bedding and worms.

Under the bedding, the officers found two plastic bags filled with four pounds of live leeches.

The MNR says it prohitibs the importation of live bait, because it can potentially introduce invasive species to local waterways and transmit parasites and viruses not native to Ontario.
