The NDP want to close loopholes in the Citizenship Act.
NDP Citizenship, Immigration, and Refugees Critic Jenny Kwan is introducing a new bill to protect Canadians who are at risk of losing their citizenship.
Kwan says she spoke with a woman who’s lived in Canada her whole life but fell through the cracks in 2004 when Citizenship and Immigration Canada changed the rules.
Kwan says the woman is the child of a war bride, and CIC accepted her proof of status for decades prior to 2004, only to declare that she was no longer a Canadian.
Kwan is calling for the Immigration Minister to support her bill to update the Act, which she says treats some like second-class citizens.
She adds that in 2007, the UN named Canada one of the top offending countries for making its citizens stateless.
