The Border Cats have a rich history of great shortstops and Matt Batten continued that tradition this past season. Batten won the Rawlings “Finest in the Field” award as the top defensive shortstop in the 18-team Northwoods League. Brett Kay, Josh Ashenbrenner and Jonathan Diaz of the Blue Jays are former Border Cats, who have also won the award. Batten is eligible to return to the Cats next season.
The Blue Jays now own the best record in the American League at 91 and 65 and they have a 5-game lead over the Yankees with six games to play. Toronto opened a 7-game road trip by rallying to beat Baltimore 4-3. The Jays reduced their magic number for clinching the East Division to two, when New York lost 5-1 to Boston.
Minnesota remains in the hunt for the final wild card spot. The Twins doubled up Cleveland 4-2, but remain a game and a half behind Houston. The Astros got by Seattle 3-2.
Aaron Rogers tore apart the Kansas City Chiefs in Monday Night Football. Rogers threw five touchdown passes, three of them to Randall Cobb, in the Packers 38-28 win over the Chiefs at Lambeau Field. Green Bay leads the NFC North at 3 and 0. Kansas City is now 1 and 2.
