A local human rights lawyer is being recognized for his work with people with disabilites.
David Shannon received the Red Cross’ Power of Humanity award, which highlights compassionate and charitable work in the community.
He says it’s overwhelming to get the award, but glad to be recognized by an organization that works to help those in need.
“If anything, it’s an affirmation that we wanted to continue to do that work, to promote the independance of the most vulnerable in our community, so that the most vulnerable don’t fall through the cracks, don’t fall behind, become silenced.”
Shannon, also a member of the Order of Canada and Order of Ontario, is the eighth person in our community to get the award since 2011.
The Red Cross is holding a gala to honour Shannon on May 3rd at the Victoria Inn.
Spokesperson Rob Kilgour explains they want to draw attention to Shannon’s work as an advocate, “Presenting the needs [of vulnerable people] to the public so that change can take place.” (Photo/Video: Colin Redston)
