City Council is giving their support for a bid to host a smelter here.
It was voted on at Monday night’s meeting.
Mayor Keith Hobbs is in favour of the bid to build Noront Resources’ ferrochrome processing plant, which he argues would have plenty of benefits.
“We need the jobs. Not just the construction jobs and the permanent jobs at the ferrochrome processor itself, but the spin-off, value-added jobs are going to be unbelievable.”
Hobbs is calling for residents to also support the project, noting he’s confident the project has the backing of Fort William First Nation and Matawa First Nations Management’s member communities as well.
City officials say it’s hoped Council’s official support will help their application to host the smelter.
