Zika virus is prompting Canada to halt blood donations from some travellers.

Health Canada says it's working with blood donation agencies to determine a deferral period for donations, for those who recently travelled to areas affected by the mosquito-borne virus.

Public Health Officer Dr. Gregory Taylor says there's no international consensus on how long donors should wait.

Four cases are being reported in Canada - two from B.C., one in Alberta, and the other in Quebec.

Taylor says all of them involving people who recently travelled to affected areas. He maintains the risk to Canadians is “very, very low.”
