A new report is out on food bank use and it finds that almost a half a million Ontario residents needed the assistance of a food bank last year.
One third of them were children.
The Ontario Association of Food Banks report also reveals 90 per cent of users were rental or social housing tenants who are spending 70 per cent of their income on housing.
More than 45 per cent of food bank clients had less than $100 left after paying basic expenses.
The Association suggests an increase to Ontario’s social assistance programs alongside investments in affordable housing.
