A $16-million funding announcement for housing on First Nation communities in northwestern Ontario should soon be bearing fruit.
That’s the feeling of the Minister of Crown – Indigenous Relations, Carolyn Bennett.
She made the funding announcement on Rat Portage last summer and says the First Nations are now starting to decide what kind of housing is needed.
The funding is being used to develop accessible housing for elders, seniors, or even larger family units.
She says Kasechewan has developed a unique housing project to fit the changing needs of that community.
They built 52 duplexes, which Bennett explains “got built in a way that they can be taken apart into four sections and moved to the higher ground when the community moves.”
Bennett says there’s a lot of innovation going into the housing projects and she’s excited to see the end product. (File Photo)
