Howard Hampton says his hopeful return to politics was urged by First Nations leaders.
Hampton, who's seeking the federal nomination for the NDP in Kenora, says he believes what he calls the "sorry record" of the Harper Conservatives will motivate more Aboriginal people to head to the polls this October.
He says Aboriginal leaders feel as though this federal government is not interested in working with them, and they need a federal partner.
Hampton, who's currently special advisor on the Ring of Fire to federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair, notes a lack of consultation on the northern Ontario mining project as a boiling point for First Nations communities. (Photo: Caryn Ceolin)
