Thunder Bay’s arts community is encouraged to get involved with environmental activities through the Painted Rain Barrel event.
EcoSuperior partners with local artists, groups, and organizations to paint barrels, which are then put up for auction to raise money for their environmental programs.
Those include summer camps for children, cigarette butt recycling programs, and litter-prevention programs.
Executive Director Ellen Mortfield is quite happy with how the last eight years have gone, noting that there was so much support from the community that EcoSuperior now cuts off the number of entries at 30.
Mortfield is thrilled with the $7,000 that the auction raised earlier this month.
She adds it’s tough to judge the entries.
Mortfield explains that staff and board members vote for some of the awards that are handed out, while kids can vote at the auction to pick which entry gets the Children’s Choice Award.
