An NDP MP wants to see changes to the way social assistance rates are determined.
Second reading of Paul Miller’s private members bill passed in the legislature yesterday.
It calls for the development of an advisory board that would recommend Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support Program rates for each region of the province, and that they be based on the real cost of living in those areas.
In Queen’s Park yesterday, Miller says recent increases to those payments are still keeping recipients well below the poverty line.
