A new book written by Lakehead Univeristy’s Chancellor, says Canada is coasting when it comes to taking advantage of economic opportunities.
Derek Burney, a former chief of staff to former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney says Canada is very comfortable in the North American cocoon, despite declining market share with the States.
He says rapid changes in the world means Canada needs to adapt its foreign policy, unless we want to end up on the wrong end of the economic scale.
“So we’re suggesting how some of these multilateral institutions should be reformed, how Canada’s contribution to them should be calibrated,” Burney says.
“Globalization is a fact of life. We either adapt to it and win, or we stop and lose.”
Burney adds Canada must adopt a stronger security footprint. (Photo: Caryn Ceolin)
