The City, the Nishnawbe Aski Nation and the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board are teaming up to create a monument marking the tainted history of the residential school system.
The $50,000 sculpture will be placed on the school grounds of Pope John Paul II which is the former site of the St. Joseph’s Indian Residential School.
Thunder Bay Aboriginal Liason Officer Ann Magiskan says part of the monument includes a chunk of amethyst which represents healing, a shell to take offerings embeded into the rock and then placed on top of a medicine wheel.
The monument is expected to be complete by the spring. (Photo supplied)
