A house fire in the south end could have been much worse if it wasn’t for a very conscientious homeowner.
Thunder Bay fire fighters say they were called to a house on the 300 block of North Syndicate Avenue last night around 8pm.
They quickly put out the fire, keeping it contained to the kitchen area, with minor smoke damage throughout the home.
No one was home at the time, but it turns out the homeowner had called 911 when a security application on his phone alerted him to the fire taking place.
Platoon Chief John Kaplanis says there were cameras set up in the home, as the homeowner showed him video, on his phone, of the smoke moving through the house, prompting the call.
Fire fighters say the cause is believed to be a faulty kitchen appliance.
No persons were in the home at the time of the fire. The homeowner discovered the fire via what is referred to as a “NEST” security app on his smart phone. Once he was alerted to the fire he initiated a 911 call for TBFR to respond. 3 TBFR Pumpers and one Command unit responded initially and remained on scene to fully ventilate to clear smoke from the structure before turning it back over to the home owners. Cause of the fire is believed to be a faulty kitchen appliance.
TBFR reminds all home owners and tenants to maintain working smoke detectors on all levels of their homes as a first line of defense to protect occupants inside by alerting them to a fire in their home early enough to get out alive.
